Case of first Airway Stenting in Advanced stages of Cancer

Advanced stages of cancers of the Lung & Oesophagus can involve breathing tube blockage by fistulae or tumours. These blockages & connections resulting secondary to the spread of cancer can be life threatening. These blockages can hamper quality of life as well as further hamper concomitant Chemotherapy feasibility.

Daignosis

Tracheal Stenosis

Introduction

If you have a cancerous growth in your trachea or bronchi which cannot be operated on and is affecting your breathing, having a stent placed may relieve your breathlessness while you undergo chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.

In some cases, a stent is placed to treat fistulas (holes) that have developed in the airway system or to treat blockages in the airway that are not cancerous. If the patient is a child, the use of biodegradable stents, which are absorbed over time, is recommended.

Treatment

The treatment for this is Airway Stenting where a stent – a tiny tube placed into a hollow structure in your body like blood vessels, breathing tube etc. The stent opens the narrowed airway and prevents it collapsing further, thus helping the patient breathe.

The stents can be placed under general anaesthesia for the procedure& is a minimally invasive pulmonary interventional procedure. The doctors will use fluoroscopy and a bronchoscope (a tiny camera inserted into your body on a tube) for guidance. A guidewire is placed into your airway system so that the stent can be guided to the correct location. Once the stent placed in the affected area, the stent will expand, clearing the airway.
